Comment on this document:

This was a fundraising concert for the yet to be finalized trip to Europe. The date of the concert is unknown. It featured the Combined Junior and Technical Students Band, the new Westview Dance Band, the Emery Concert Band, The `Centennial` Band and a musical re-enactment of the Battle of Queenston heights for good measure.

Here are the liner notes:

The Westview Centennial Concert Band was formed in September of 1967, shortly after the school opened. The Band made rapid progress during its first year and in the current year has performed in Hamilton, Ontario; New York City; Sussex, New Brunswick and several cities and towns in Nova Scotia. While on tour of the Maritime Provinces the Band presented two concerts on CJCB T.V. in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Membership in the Band is available to any student in the school although the Band is comprised largely of students registered in the Music Option. The Technical Student's Band was formed in September, 1968. Membership in this group is drawn from students enrolled in the Science, Technology and Trades Courses.

The Junior Section of the Centennial Band is open to students in grades nine and ten and in February 1969, the Band won an award at the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival.

The music featured on this record was performed by the Band during its Nova Scotia Tour and displays the Band's increasing versatility in various types of traditional and contemporary music.

The Conductor

Michael Crosbie, born and raised in England, attended school at Nazareth House, Southend-on-Sea. After showing early musical promise he joined a British Army Band and graduated from Kneller Hall at the age of sixteen.

Michael Crosbie
(1989)

Mr. Crosbie played the oboe professionally in various bands and orchestras throughout England, and after studying music in Germany, he emigrated to Canada in 1957.

There he became a member of the renowned Royal Canadian Air Force Band. In 1959 Michael Crosbie entered the teaching profession after attending the Toronto Conservatory of Music, where he obtained his A.R.C.T. diploma.

He has since obtained his Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Toronto, and has been head of the Music department at Westview Centennial Secondary School since its opening in 1967.

During his three years with North York Board of Education, Mr. Crosbie has been closely connected with the music enrichment courses, particularly in the Woodwind Chamber Music area. He has been also working for the Adult Education Department of the Board teaching music history and appreciation.

Mr. Crosbie has been assisted this past year in the Music department by Mr. Kenneth Jones, who has been responsible for the outstanding success of the Centennaires Stage Band. Mr. Jones is continuing with further studies this year and is unable to be on the tour.

The Band Supporters Club

F. Martyn Hedges

Martyn Hedges

To assist the Band in its many out of school endeavours and to aid them in purchasing uniforms, it was decided in 1967 by a small group of interested parents to form a Band Supporters' Club.

The Westview Centennial Band Supporters' Club is open to all, at an annual membership fee of $2.00, and at present there are 250 members.

The first fund-raising venture was to finance the Band on a tour of the Maritime Provinces of Canada. As a result of the outstanding success of this tour and the wide acclaim received, it was agreed in the spring of 1969 to raise funds to send the Band on a tour of the United Kingdom.

Since its inception the club has raised approximately $35,000 (E15,000) of which $30,000 has been allocated for this current tour.

It is evident that the Concert Band's activities would be very limited without the enthusiastic and dedicated work of its Supporters' Club. Elsewhere in this souvenir program is a list of some of the fund-raising projects undertaken by the club in order to finance this tour. The Supporters' Club financial successes are making it possible for every individual member of the Band to participate fully in all musical activities and tours.

The inspirational leadership of the Band Supporters' Club has come from its founding president Mr. Martyn Hedges, a Toronto businessman, who has three sons in the Band.

Executive of the Band Supporters' Club:

Mr. F. Martyn Hedges

Mr. Ken Jones

Mrs. G. Berdine

Telephone Convenor
Mrs. J. W. Trimble
